The death toll, which was confirmed by the Valencia regional government, was expected to rise. More than 1,000 soldiers from an emergency response team have been deployed to aid civilians. More rain was expected today in the region, officials warned.
With roads flooded and emergency workers rushing to reach people, authorities have urged people in the area not to travel.
Heavy rain began in earnest on Monday night in the region, with more than a month’s worth of rain falling over the course of 24 hours in some areas.
