Met Office issues yellow weather warning for ice in North East
by Nicole Goodwin · ChronicleLivePeople in the North East are being warned to take extra care as colder temperatures and the possibility of further wintry showers are expected to bring icy conditions.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for ice on Thursday, suggesting that scattered wintry showers may lead to some icy patches.
An alert runs from 4pm on Thursday, January 9, until 10am the following day. This covers the whole of the North East, including Newcastle, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Gateshead, Sunderland, Durham and Northumberland.
The warning says: "Scattered wintry showers, occasionally feeding inland from the North Sea through Thursday evening and night, may lead to some icy patches on untreated surfaces as temperatures fall below freezing. Isolated snow accumulations of 1-3 cm are possible, mainly on hills above 150m elevation."
People have been advised that the weather could create an increased risk of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces and icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.
The weather experts said: "Keep yourself and your family safe when it is icy. Plan to leave the house at least five minutes earlier than normal. Not needing to rush, reduces your risk of accidents, slips, and falls.
"If you need to make a journey on foot, try to use pavements along main roads which are likely to be less slippery. Similarly, if cycling, try and stick to main roads which are more likely to have been treated.
"Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.
"Be prepared for weather warnings to change: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area."
