Aldi has emerged victorious over its budget rival Lidl, securing the title of the UK's cheapest supermarket for September, based on a consumer group's research. Which? conducted a study where 59 items were purchased from various retailers, finding that the total average cost at Aldi was £102.68.

Lidl was a close second, being only £1.18 more expensive, with an average cost of £103.86. Securing third place was Asda, with an average spend of £112.19, while Tesco, taking advantage of Clubcard prices, came in fourth at £112.96.

Without the Clubcard, Tesco's basket rose slightly to £113.35. Sainsbury's saw customers with a Nectar card paying on average £113.79, with no card the figure rose to £119.19.

At the opposite end, Waitrose took the mantle of the most costly supermarket for September, with the shopping tally reaching £130.37 on average—£27.69 pricier than Aldi, marking an increase of 27%, reports the Manchester Evening News.

The assortment of items assessed by Which? included both branded and own-brand products, such as Birds Eye Peas and Hovis bread, along with essentials like milk and butter, factoring in special offer prices and loyalty prices excluding multibuys.

While other supermarkets like Lidl, Morrisons, and Waitrose have two-tier pricing structures, they are less extensive. For September, none of the products on the Which? shopping list had lower prices exclusive for their loyalty scheme members.

Expressing her views on the findings, Ele Clark, Which? retail editor, commented: "Our latest monthly analysis once again sees Aldi crowned as the UK's cheapest supermarket. Given the ongoing strain of high food prices on household budgets, it's understandable many people are choosing discounters to cut costs."

"By switching supermarkets, consumers could save 21 per cent, highlighting the advantages of shopping around."

In August, Aldi was praised as the UK's cheapest supermarket with a 62-item basket costing an average of £110.58 - Lidl was a close second at just £111.88 with its Lidl Plus discount and £112.17 without it. Waitrose remained the most expensive, with the same shop reaching £140.89.

As we look to September 2024 data, Aldi leads again at £102.68, with Lidl at £103.86. The list continues with Asda at £112.19, Tesco with Clubcard savings at £112.96, and higher without the Clubcard at £113.35.

Sainsbury's is offered at a competitive £113.79 with Nectar points and only slightly more at £119.19 for those without. The other contenders are Morrisons standing at £119.18, Ocado at £125.16, while Waitrose has seen prices drop but remains the priciest at £130.37.
