A mum has started a dog training business to create an employment opportunity for her autistic son, as well as others in similar positions.

Kim Welford, from Walker, wants to provide hope to those who struggle to keep a job due to their neurodiversity.

After losing her husband in 2013, Kim's life changed dramatically, and she decided that she wanted to do something to help her son Simon, who has autism. Simon had previously had issues with remaining in employment, so Kim decided to start a business which he could be a valuable part of, something which has taken a lot of work.

Kim went off to the US to study business, as well as taking courses here in the UK, so that she could be fully equipped. When it came to what the venture would actually be, she had only one thing in mind, it would revolve around dog training, and Welford Dog Services was created.

Speaking about the origins of Welford Dog Services, Kim said: "I was working as a chef on the railways and I also started up a little cleaning business, but the dog service idea came when I saw the impact that they had on Simon.

"They have been a huge form of therapy for him, and I feel like combining work with his love of dogs is perfect. I want to support other young people in training dogs to help people like this, as I have seen just what they can do,

"I think that for everyone, but especially those with autism and other neurodivergence's, working with animals is very comforting. I have been helped by PNE Enterprise in Newcastle to get things set up, and I am learning more about marketing and social media to continue to improve.

"I just want to give people a chance and a hope when they might not have many ways that they can turn. It is exciting to start this venture and I'm grateful that I'm able to give my son Simon and other young people this opportunity."
