In Pictures: Gateshead work continues after flooding on Great North Run day

Take a look at a series of photographs as the work continues after the flooding on Great North Run day in Gateshead. Northumbrian Water engineers are working in the area, with staff from Gateshead Council, as a result of the burst on a water main near Askew Road.

There was traffic chaos on one of the region's busiest days, with a road closure for several hours while the water that had gathered was cleared. Photographs taken today show an excavator clearing the soil and debris, and signage shows that a footpath in the area is closed at this time.

A Northumbrian Water spokesperson said: "Our teams are continuing to work hard on site following a burst on a water main near Askew Road in Gateshead earlier this month. Following the burst, which was on the grassed verge alongside Askew Road, a huge amount of soil and debris was washed away.

"While the road fully reopened last week, and there is no further impact to traffic, there will still be a large amount of work being carried out in the area, with our teams being based around St Cuthbert's Road. Alongside Gateshead Council , we are currently making the area as safe as possible before repairs on the main take place.

"Some heavy machinery will be working in the area for the next few weeks, and we advise that residents still take care in the area around Village Heights and St Cuthbert's Road, and follow the guidance of the heras fencing. Thank you for your patience."
