Agent explains how RDZ helped player choose Tottenham over Manchester City
by Naveen Ullal · Sport WitnessSandro Tonali’s agent Giuseppe Riso says Tottenham Hotspur‘s change of policy and Roberto De Zerbi played a role in his move to the Premier League side amid interest from Manchester City.
The Italy international first moved to England when Newcastle United signed him from AC Milan in 2023.
He wanted a new challenge in the summer, and there were reports linking him to a few clubs. This includes Manchester City while Tottenham won the battle in the end.
In July, Spurs paid a club-record fee of £100m [€108m] to take the midfielder away from St. James’ Park.
De Zerbi’s important role in Tottenham signing
Roberto De Zerbi took charge of the club in March and played a key role in helping them avoid relegation last season. In the summer window, Tottenham Hotspur have backed the manager heavily as they invested over €350m.
A large part of it went on signing Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes. Spurs beat Manchester United to sign Fernandes while there were reports of Manchester City wanting the Italian.
Giuseppe Riso was a guest on Colpi da Maestro, and TuttoMercatoWeb have relayed his comments.
Last month, the representative said the north London club’s project made it easier for the 26-year-old to pick them. He now explains the manager’s role and Tottenham’s bold plans as other reasons amid claims of Manchester City interest.
“After Newcastle, Tottenham showed they’re choosing differently; they’re courageous,” he said.
“Tottenham was reborn after the end of the season; Tottenham survived, and De Zerbi came to the house, telling him they needed him as a leader. The relationship with De Zerbi carried a lot of weight.”
Tonali must prove his worth at Tottenham
The Premier League side have endured a difficult run, collecting only two points after five matches this season.
Tottenham Hotspur are bottom of the table. Sandro Tonali and other big signings have to prove their worth on the pitch to help the club to get out of the difficult situation.
The Italian has played 429 minutes from five matches for Spurs.
