“It’s just insane” – Chelsea man good enough for major transfer, could replace Beckham
by Sean Lunt · Sport WitnessNow that Romeo Lavia is fit at Chelsea, it’s fair to say that he’s making a very positive impression. And that’s not just in the British press.
Over in Belgium, they’re in love with the Chelsea midfielder as well. So much so, that it seems they’re convinced that he could be playing for the biggest clubs in the world in the near future.
Lavia’s latest impressive performance came in Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Manchester United on Saturday. The Belgian was outstanding in that game, spraying passes across the pitch and offering defensive strength too.
In fact, one of his particularly good interceptions set the move in motion that led to the opening goal of the game. It was a moment that earned him plenty of praise.
What’s being said about Chelsea player
Filip Joos was one of those who was waxing lyrical back in Belgium. He believes that the Chelsea midfielder is now Belgium’s best player.
“I believe that, among our current Belgian footballers, he is the only one who is currently in the world’s top 30,” he told 90 Minutes.
“In his position, he’s top five. Honestly, he could play for Real Madrid, Barcelona, or PSG. That ball he played in the second half with the outside of his right boot—it’s devastating. He sees everything.”
He was particularly impressed by the Chelsea midfielder’s passing. And, jokes that it should lead to him replacing David Beckham at Gilette.
“If you’re sitting high up in the stadium, you can see it,” he added.
“But you get so used to it that even very good footballers don’t always spot these things, which is perfectly normal. If he manages to see them consistently and execute them well.
“I mentioned it during my commentary: if you’re the boss at Gillette and you’re still using David Beckham because of his smooth skin, get rid of him! You should sign Lavia for his ‘razor-sharp’ passes. Every single pass is like a razor.”
Born too late for golden generation
Joos even thinks that, had Lavia been born earlier, he would have led Belgium’s Golden Generation to the success that they desperately sought.
“If Lavia had been born 10 or 15 years earlier, we would have won the World Cup with our ‘Golden Generation’,” he insisted.
“That was the one position where we lacked someone with a 10-meter field of vision. Lavia has a 70-meter field of vision. He could spot the squirrels in the cemetery next to Stamford Bridge.
“We don’t have a bias when it comes to Lavia. It’s staring you right in the face. It’s so obvious—it’s just insane.”
Joos believes that the major difference is that Lavia has now had the weight lifted off of his shoulders after an injury hit first year at Chelsea.
The midfielder’s time at Stamford Bridge has been heavily disrupted by recurring fitness issues, with him spending over 500 days out of action and missing nearly 80 matches in total due to hamstring, thigh and ankle injuries.
He appears to have overcome those issues, and Joos believes we are seeing the benefits.
“A real weight has been lifted off his shoulders,” he concluded.
“That smile says it all.” Joos also saw the fact that Lavia remained on the pitch as a telling sign.
“It was a substitution without the usual applause, and yet, there was applause. The very fact that they left him on the field was the finest kind of ovation.”
