Buyback clause can enable €35m transfer to Newcastle United in summer

Aleksandar Stankovic can find himself in the middle of a tug-of-war in the summer, with Newcastle United a candidate to sign him.

The midfielder joined Club Brugge from Inter Milan in 2025 after an initial loan spell at Luzern. The Italian side were keen on having a say over his future and inserted a buyback option.

This decision is paying off, with Stankovic contributing to 14 goals in all competitions for the Belgian club. He has featured in close to 4000 minutes, mainly operating as the deepest midfielder in their side, scoring twice in the Champions League too.

This has convinced Inter Milan to bring Stankovic back, but Newcastle United are lying in wait for an opportunity.

Future not as certain

Gazzetta dello Sport appear sure that the Serbian will return to the Nerazzurri. They will exercise their option to buy him back for €25m and are convinced that he is a fully developed young player now.

They will make more assessments of his qualities but there is every chance he can be sold on in the summer.

This is mainly because of financial reasons. Newcastle United – along with Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid, can make ‘significant offers’ for the youngster. They are keeping a close eye on his situation and have been quite impressed by his progress in Belgium.

Inter would demand a fee of €30m to €35m to sell Stankovic, as that figure will allow them to make a capital gain.

Even if Inter believe the 20-year-old can play for the first-team, anything over €35m will be difficult to reject. As a result, all possibilities remain open for the talent.

Our take: Stankovic would be a fine signing

Inter’s decision on Stankovic will come down to money and the chance of a capital gain. This should alert Newcastle United, who will likely part ways with at least one of Sandro Tonali or Bruno Guimaraes.

Stankovic would come in as a very good signing, considering his age and how much he would cost. He, like Tonali, can play at 6 or 8 and has proven himself in the Champions League.

He hasn’t played in the top five leagues yet but Inter’s opinion on him probably says a lot. Usually, the Nerazzurri aren’t a club that makes bad transfer decisions. If they are spending €25m on a youngster, he is someone who can play at the highest level.

Back in November, Sport Witness covered about Newcastle United’s interest in Stankovic. So clearly, they have keeping an eye on the youngster for a while now and there could be something brewing.
