Aston Villa player takes break from fitness recovery to attend beer festival

Aston Villa midfielder Leon Goretzka has taken break from his fitness battle with a knee injury, to return to Munich for Oktoberfest.

TZ report that the midfielder was in Munich last weekend to attend the annual beer festival alongside his former Bayern Munich teammates.

A long relationship

Goretzka left Bayern to join Aston Villa on a free transfer this summer. It marked the end of an eight year stay with the German giants. He made 312 appearances and won seven league titles, one Champions League and various other cups as well with the club.

That means ties run deep and apparently even fitness concerns can’t overcome them. The 31-year-old was back in Munich – his adopted home – last weekend.

Munich’s Oktoberfest kicked off on Saturday and, as always, was attended by Bayern stars. Joshua Kimmich was the main man this time around.

He was joined by Goretzka. He ‘didn’t want to miss the opening weekend of the festival and strolled across the Theresienwiese on Sunday.’

Bayern reunion

The Aston Villa midfielder presumably linked up with his former Bayern teammates. They were celebrating their 7-0 win over FC Union during their traditional Oktoberfest outing. TZ makes no comment on how much they drank or what kind of partying might have happened.

Still the visit for Goretzka is an interesting one given he’s yet to feature for Aston Villa this season. He’s been dealing with a knee injury that’s made him unavailable for selection so far.

Quite how a trip back to Munich for a knees up at Oktoberfest is any help in that regard is anyone’s guess. Perhaps after eight years, Goretzka simply sees the opening weekend at Oktoberfest as too important to miss, even if he is now in Birmingham.

Or perhaps he fancied a weekend away to see some old faces, remember the good times and forget about what has been a difficult start to life in England at Aston Villa.
