DoF watching Manchester United fallout closely – Manager would welcome signing

by · Sport Witness

Bruno Fernandes’ outburst after Manchester United’s loss to Como has opened the floodgates for transfer talk. Leaving him on the bench against Bournemouth only strengthened the idea.

The Portuguese midfielder is undoubtedly Manchester United’s best player – and their captain – but it is clear that things are not right behind the scenes.

Crucially, the 32-year-old is out of contract next year. That deal reportedly includes an option to extend it by further year, but it still leaves Manchester United with a major decision to make.

With reports that talks over a contract extension have been halted too, that question is becoming even more prominent.

January is just around the corner, and it could be the last chance for Manchester United to secure a big sale. That won’t be on offer in the summer, even if they activate that extension option. Thus, the rumours are building across Europe.

Transfer interest

Sport Witness covered a report today about AC Milan potentially eyeing a move. Now we head to Spain, where Fichajes say that Atletico Madrid are keeping a close eye on proceedings.

Specifically, it is director of football Mateu Alemany who is ‘closely monitoring’ Bruno’s situation.

He would be more than open to bringing Fernandes to the Wanda Metropolitano. He believes that that Manchester United captain offers several qualities that the squad currently lacks.

They are they ability to orchestrate attacks, link up with the forwards and contribute directly to the team’s offensive output.

The feeling is that he could operate behind the forwards or in a deeper role, providing Diego Simeone with various options.

Simeone says yes

The Argentine boss ‘would look favourably’ on the deal too.

He wants players who are capable of contributing to his high press while also taking responsibility when in possession. The feeling is that Fernandes can offer both. Manchester United fans may differ when it comes to pressing but Fichajes are convinced.

The primary obstacle would be reaching a financial agreement with Manchester United. For now, no formal offer has been confirmed. Much will depend on what Fernandes decides to do next.

Should he look to leave Old Trafford in January, Mateu Alemany could look to turn Atletico’s interest into formal negotiations.
