No progress made over Manchester City renewal – Transfer gesture came as surprise

by · Sport Witness

Real Madrid have Manchester City‘s Joško Gvardiol on their list for the summer.

Earlier this month, Sport Witness covered claims from Croatia of Real Madrid’s interest in the defender.

The same source reported Manchester City offering a ‘significantly rich contract’ to fend off the La Liga side.

Gvardiol suffered an injury in January for which he underwent surgery and returned to action in the Premier League side’s 3-0 win over Crystal Palace last week.

The Croatia international is now focusing on improving his fitness ahead of the World Cup.

Manchester City star offered to Real Madrid

Behind the scenes, there are some movements that could impact his future at the Etihad. That’s according to AS, who report Joško Gvardiol has been offered to the Spanish capital club.

After a disappointing season, Real Madrid will look to improve their squad and centre-back remains a priority. The 24-year-old can be an option for Los Blancos, who have several other names on their list.

The Manchester City man’s agent offering him to Real Madrid has come as a surprise to the latter as they ‘weren’t expecting such a gesture’.

Los Blancos showed interest in the Croatian even before he left RB Leipzig for Manchester City in August 2023.

The former Leipzig man’s contract with Pep Guardiola’s side expires in 2028 and AS state ‘there’s no movement to finalise a deal’. His agent is exploring potential options, and Real Madrid is his preferred choice.

Meanwhile, Manchester City star Bernardo Silva’s agent Jorge Mendes is offering him to Real Madrid. His contract expires in June and he will be available for free in the summer.

Guardiola’s future impacting Manchester City players

The uncertainty around Pep Guardiola’s future at Manchester City will also impact some players’ Etihad futures.

The manager’s contract expires in 2027 and the latest claims in the UK have stated he could leave after this season.

AS state ‘more than one player in the City dressing room is waiting for news’ regarding Guardiola and Joško Gvardiol could be among them.

His value, as per Transfermarkt, is €70m. The highest value was €80m in October 2023, months after he moved to the Etihad. The defender has played 1,854 minutes from 24 matches this season, even managing two goals and five assists.
