The showrunner of House Of The Dragon has discussed how the forthcoming third season’s debut will be “arguably the craziest episode of television ever made.”

The Game Of Thrones prequel show, based on aspects of George R. R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, returns on June 21, airing on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK. Ahead of its debut, showrunner Ryan Condal revealed to EW that the season opens with the epic sea confrontation titled The Battle Of The Gullet. Cordal described it as “arguably the craziest episode of television ever made”, he said the sequence was essential to include in the show.

“To try to tell this story without doing the Gullet would be trying to film Lord Of The Rings without doing the Battle of Helm’s Deep,” he said. “If we were gonna do it, we had to do it right. And that meant dragons and ships and multiple theatres of conflict.”

Emma D’Arcy, who plays Rhaenyra Targaryen in the show, added: “The series this time around starts at 60 miles an hour. We’re finally watching a war that has been building for two seasons…. I’m so impressed by Ryan and the team, because it’s to really hold your nerve to stage a conflict that has been, until now, primarily interpersonal, inter-family — and then [to] finally, in one huge gesture, allow that conflict to unleash on the realm as a whole, I think is some very classy plotting.”

Recently, it was announced that House Of The Dragon would end with its fourth season. However, the Game Of Thrones universe will continue, with a stage play set to debut this year, as well as a big screen spin-off being developed by the writer of House Of Cards.
