“Weird Al” Yankovic Broadway musical ‘Dare to Be Stupid’ in the works

A musical about “Weird Al” Yankovic is being developed for Broadway, from the makers of the hit Beetlejuice and Moulin Rouge! stage productions.

Dare To Be Stupid: The Weird Al Musical, is being developed for the famous New York theatre district, with details on dates and venue yet to be announced (via Deadline). Moulin Rouge! director Alex Timbers is on board, alongside Beetlejuice writers Scott Brown and Anthony King also involved.

It’s reported that many of the parody singer’s greatest hits will be included in the production, including ‘White & Nerdy’ (a parody of Chamillionaire’s ‘Ridin’), ‘Eat It’ (a spoof of Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It’), and ‘Like a Surgeon’ (based on Madonna’s ‘Like a Virgin’).

“Ever since I was a middle-aged man, I’ve always wanted to be a part of the New York theatre community,” Yankovic said in a press statement. “Plus, the one thing people always say about Broadway is that it’s ‘severely lacking in Weird Al-based entertainment,’ and I think this musical should fix that problem immediately.”

A beloved figure in comedy and music, Yankovic has sold over 12million albums, won five Grammy awards, and appeared in numerous movies.

In 2022, Daniel Radcliffe played the singer in the movie Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. A parody of music biopics, it followed a highly fictionalised account of his rise to fame. Yankovic co-wrote and produced the movie, as well as appearing in a cameo.

NME’s four-star review of the movie called it “a cult classic in the making”, adding: “Radcliffe’s winning performance – like a goofy high-schooler who wins the lottery – is enough to keep everyone laughing.”

Late last year, “Weird Al” Yankovic was announced as part of the line-up for this year’s Bonnaroo festival.
