Is Heartstopper season 4 happening?

As the third season airs, we need more of Nick and Charlie already.

Now that season three is finally here, Heartstopper fans and long-term supporters of lovers Nick and Charlie want to know: will we be getting a Heartstopper season 4?

Alice Oseman's gorgeous queer graphic novels have had us all fall in love. From teen couple Nick and Charlie's romantic story to the amazing friendship group they form, watching Heartstopper is feels like a soothing cup of tea.

The show has garnered huge support and recognition for its spotlighting of queerness, gender fluidity, asexuality and much more for young people. It has also acted as a breakthrough for supporting cast such as Yasmin Finney, who has since starred in Doctor Who alongside Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa.

So, after season three's coverage of Charlie's mental health and the question of university for all of the gang, what comes next? Will there be a fourth instalment on Netflix?

Here's everything we know so far about a potential Heartstopper season 4 – which if it happens, could well be the last. We'll keep this article updated as soon as any renewal news drops!

Heartstopper season 4 plot

Seeing as season three has covered volumes four and five of the comic, we would hazard a guess that if Netflix were to renew Heartstopper for a fourth season, it would cover the sixth volume, which creator Alice Oseman is still in the process of writing. In a recent interview with The Guardian, she also opened up about how it felt about volume six being the final chapter of the story – suggesting that if we get a Heartstopper season 4, it would be the final season also.

“I’m only 50 pages in, but I know what’s going to happen, what all the dialogue is going to be, and now I’m just sitting down and drawing it, which is my favourite bit," Alice said. "I’m really excited about what’s going to happen towards the end of the story, but it’s also very bittersweet. I also feel it’s absolutely the right time for it to end. It’s very sad, but it’s time.”

Alice has also voiced her hope that the show will be renewed, so we've got everything crossed. “I am very much hoping that there will be a fourth season, so the show gets to have a proper ending! I’m praying to the gods! Begging on my knees! Having nightmares about it regularly,” she wrote on her Patreon.

Heartstopper season 4 cast

Of course, because the show hasn't been renewed for a fourth season we don't have a confirmed cast, but we know who we'd like to return – pretty much everyone.

That would include Kit Connor and Joe Locke of course, as well as the cast who play their wonderful pals, including William Gao, Yasmin Finney, Rhea Norwood, Kizzy Edgell, Toby Donovan, Corrina Brown – and of course, Charlie's wonderfully sarcastic sister Tori, played by Jenny Walser, also needs to return – in or opinions, at least.

Olivia Colman also didn't appear in season three, in her role as Nick's adorable mum, due to scheduling problems – so we're hoping she'll be back for season four.

Plus, after Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey's cameo in season three, Kit Connor has opened up about wanting Andrew Scott to appear in season four. He called the Fleabag actor "my answer to most things”, adding: “He’s brilliant. That would be great.”

Heartstopper season 4 release date

Seeing as it hasn't been renewed yet, we unfortunately don't have any clarity on a release date for Heartstopper season 4. Alice has also said volume six of Heartstopper will be released before a fourth season.
