Devon man's lockdown bagel hobby turned into a thriving 100-job South West empire
by Bethia Wyborn · DevonLiveA Devon entrepreneur who began making bagels at home during lockdown has seen his idea grow into a thriving business which employs more than 100 people in the South West.
With a family background in the local food industry, Dan Lakeman first started experimenting with bagel recipes to pass the time during lockdown.
He then took the plunge in 2020 and opened his The Bagel Shop in Sidmouth, turning his hobby into a full-time venture.
Six years on, the business has expanded to multiple locations across the South West, including a recently opened shop in Exeter and Lyme Regis.
Dan Lakeman, owner of The Bagel Shop said: “Exeter is an incredible city with such a strong sense of identity and community. As someone who’s grown up in East Devon, it means a lot to be opening here. What started as a small idea during lockdown has grown into something I’m hugely proud of, but the thinking hasn’t changed. Good food, no fuss, and ingredients you can feel good about eating every day. The reaction we’ve had in Exeter so far has been amazing, and that’s been special to see.”
Dan remains closely involved in the day-to-day running of the business, often found on the frontline serving customers his very own ‘RedStack’ coffee which he brews himself in Sidmouth or serving a slice of homemade cake made by his baker Laura.
Dan continued: “This year, The Bagel Shop celebrates its sixth anniversary and it’s great to be here in the city centre for it. I want the shops to be a place to come and relax, it’s an inclusive vibe. By working with local producers, I can ensure products remain fresh and high quality at an accessible price, making it a go-to option for affordable, unfussy lunches.”
