Donald Trump will be the next President of the United States...again. And while our first priority as Canadians right now is to support our American friends and loved ones, many of us are also filled with worries and thoughts about our own future.
Particularly since Canada seems to follow in the United States' footsteps — along with the fact that we have our own election in 2025 — Canadians have been expressing their wariness online, along with some other candid thoughts.
So here's how Canadians on X have been reacting:
1.

Rough. Happy to be Canadian tonight. Not looking forward for what our cycle will look like.
America proves that they are the dumbest country on the planet.
Shout out to the millions of Americans who attempted to do the right thing. I’m not blaming you. I wish you all the best.

As a Canadian, I have the same feeling this morning as I did in 2016. I remember thinking there must be more hateful horrible people in the USA then not. Only this time its worse cause I know America will never recover from 4 more years of Donald Trump. Beware of fascists Canada.

As a person living abroad, the election feels distant yet endlessly impactful.
As a Canadian, I genuinely fear for the safety of my family and friends.
As a woman, I am disgusted and will never feel safe enough to travel to America again.

While I’m sitting in class knowing that our neighbours would rather elect a racist, sexist, homophobic r4pist than a flawless woman who brought hope to the US.

It’s time for Canada to move away from the dependency on the US. It will take time but at this point we need to protect our own country.
America made their choice. Doesn’t mean we have to go along with them.
