He called attention to the emerging threats to Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections, declaring that credible polls are inseparable from national security.

According to him, elections and security must no longer be treated as separate concerns but as “two sides of the same coin of national stability.”

The INEC Chairman warned that Nigeria is entering a critical phase following the release of the 2027 election timetable, noting that the scheduled presidential and National Assembly elections on January 16, 2027, and governorship polls on February 6, 2027, now represent not just political milestones but “a security trigger.”

Amupitan identified a “sophisticated triad” of threats facing Nigeria’s elections, including social media volatility, AI-driven disinformation, and Foreign Information Manipulation (FIMI), compounded by logistical and security challenges such as insurgency and communal conflicts.

According to Disu, the move is part of efforts to decentralize policing in the country.

In a statement by the Special Adviser to the Deputy President of the Senate on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, it was explained that the 75-page framework was submitted on behalf of the IGP by Professor Olu Ogunsakin, Chairman of the committee set up by the Nigeria Police Force to examine the modalities for establishing State Police in Nigeria.

Delivering a lecture titled ‘Credible Elections and National Security in Nigeria’, Igini said the current framework of the proposed law poses a serious threat to the integrity of future elections.

He warned that unless the issues surrounding the Act are addressed, Nigerians may be denied the opportunity to freely determine their leaders in the 2027 general elections.

Igini described the situation as a “tragedy” that must be urgently corrected.

The former electoral commissioner stressed the need for immediate reforms to safeguard the credibility of the electoral process ahead of the next general elections.

His remarks come days after the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, publicly apologised to Nigerians over the persistent electricity outages that have affected homes, businesses and industries across the country.

Defending the minister’s action, Olowoniyi said the apology demonstrated leadership rather than an admission of personal responsibility.
