The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Saturday evening, announced that the collation of the Ondo State governorship election results would commence by 11 pm.

INEC National Commissioner, Prof Kunle Ajayi, affirmed the decision while giving update on the election in a chat with Channels Television in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

He said once the collation begins at the State Collation Centre, the exercise wouldn’t end until an eventual winner is declared.

Ajayi said, “By exactly 11 pm this evening, we are going to start the state collation and once we start, it will be a marathon. Until we declare the winner, we won’t leave here.

“I can assure you that until we declare the winner, we won’t leave here. We will wait until the last local government before we leave.”

According to Ajayi, the commission is optimistic that the whole exercise should be concluded by Sunday morning.

He specifically said hopefully by 6am tomorrow, a winner should have emerged.

“As at 30 minutes ago, seven local governments have completed their collation and are already on the ground. Maybe before 12 midnight or 2am, more than half of the results would have been in.

“I don’t have any fear that even by 6am, maybe everything would have been over,” the National Commissioner added.

When probed further, the INEC official explained that some results were being delayed owing to some riverine parts of the state.

“There are local governments that are so far away. One of them is about 190 kilometres to Akure and across the river, so we have to wait.

“There are some with difficult terrains that a kind of delay. When they return, motorbikes will take the results from them, then they will join a vehicle to come to Akure here,” he added
