Martin Amaewhule-Led Assembly Calls For Suspension Of Rivers LG Elections

by · Naija News

The Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Martin Amaewhule, has adopted a resolution advocating for the suspension of the planned Local Government Election in the state, referencing a judgment from the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Naija News reports that the Assembly resolved to promptly communicate this decision to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) through a strongly worded letter.

This action follows a protest march organized by members of the Rivers State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday, which took place at both the Department of State Security office and the Government House in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State.

During the protest at the DSS office, PDP representative Aron Chukwuemeka articulated that the primary objective was to oppose the Local Government Elections scheduled for October 5.

Conversely, the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Victor Oko-Jumbo, has called for the Local Government Election planned for Saturday to proceed in accordance with the rule of law and existing judgments that support the electoral process.

In a plenary session on Thursday, Assembly Speaker Victor Oko-Jumbo stated that this stance is consistent with the position of the Executive Arm of Government and Governor Siminalayi Fubara, emphasizing the importance of establishing a properly elected political leadership at the local government level in the state.

The Local Government elections are scheduled for October 5, 2024.
