Myanmar Warns of Fake Leave Documents Used for Illegal Overseas Departure
· Eleven Media Group Co., LtdMyanmar’s Labour Department says some first-time migrant workers are forging leave documents and posing as returning workers to illegally go abroad.
According to the department, these individuals are trying to bypass required procedures such as official recruitment, pre-departure training, and medical checks. By using fake “leave” letters, they exploit channels meant for workers returning to their overseas jobs.
Authorities say stricter checks are being carried out to ensure safe migration and to prevent risks including human trafficking.
From May 1, workers returning to Myanmar on leave must obtain a valid employer-issued leave letter before traveling. They are also required to present it at a Myanmar embassy or consulate to receive official endorsement. Those in countries without Myanmar missions must seek approval from the nearest embassy.
Officials added that if a worker’s job details differ between their work permit, visa, leave letter, and OWIC card, they must reapply for a new OWIC card upon arrival in Myanmar.
Anyone found submitting fake documents will face a temporary ban on overseas employment and be blacklisted.
The department also said that migrant workers returning home must apply at least five working days in advance for permission to re-depart, with approvals published daily on the Safe Migration Telegram Channel.
