President U Min Aung Hlaing travels to Laos on state-level goodwill visit
by EMG · Eleven Media Group Co., LtdPresident U Min Aung Hlaing began a state-level goodwill visit to the Lao People's Democratic Republic on the morning of July 3 at the invitation of Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith, according to sources.
President U Min Aung Hlaing is paying the visit from July 3 to 5, accompanied by a high-level delegation. During the visit, he is scheduled to meet President Thongloun Sisoulith and hold bilateral talks, as well as meet the Prime Minister of Laos, the Speaker of the National Assembly, and a provincial governor. He will also visit significant landmarks and historic temples in Laos.
The visit is expected to focus on further strengthening the longstanding friendship between Myanmar and Laos, while expanding cooperation in economic, cultural, and other sectors for the mutual benefit of the two countries and their peoples.
President U Min Aung Hlaing is accompanied by his wife, Daw Kyu Kyu Hla, together with Union ministers and senior officials.
Myanmar and Laos established diplomatic relations in 1955 and have since maintained close ties and cooperation through bilateral, regional, and international frameworks. This year marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The visit follows the official trip to Myanmar by Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Thongsavanh Phomvihane from June 11 to 13, 2026. During that visit, he met President U Min Aung Hlaing and discussed the longstanding friendship between the two nations, prospects for expanding cooperation in political, economic, educational, health, cultural, and trade sectors, and the promotion of connectivity and trade through the Myanmar–Laos Friendship Bridge.
The discussions also covered the enhancement of people-to-people exchanges, cooperation within ASEAN, efforts to strengthen regional relations, Myanmar’s engagement with ASEAN initiatives, including the Five-Point Consensus, and opportunities for both countries to support one another in addressing common challenges.
During the visit, the Lao Deputy Prime Minister also delivered a letter from President Thongloun Sisoulith inviting President U Min Aung Hlaing to undertake a state visit to Laos.
Previously, in September 2025, while attending engagements in Tianjin, China, President U Min Aung Hlaing, then serving as Acting President and Chairman of the State Security and Peace Commission, held a private meeting with President Thongloun Sisoulith. The two leaders discussed stability and peace along border areas, enhancement of bilateral friendship and cooperation, promotion of tourism and trade, military-to-military cooperation, and other areas of mutual interest.
