Electricity and Energy Minister attends energy meetings in Thailand, discusses transporting Russian LNG to Myanmar for shared use with Thailand and other matters
by EMG · Eleven Media Group Co., LtdThe Union Minister for Electricity and Energy attended energy-related meetings in Thailand and held discussions on transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia to Myanmar for shared use with Thailand, along with other matters, according to sources.
Union Minister for Electricity and Energy U Ko Ko Lwin, who is currently in Thailand to undertake energy-related activities, separately met Thai Minister of Energy H.E. Mr. Akanat Promphan and Russian Minister of Economic Development H.E. Mr. Maxim Reshetnikov on October 31, accompanied by the Myanmar Ambassador to Thailand. The meetings focused on trilateral energy cooperation among Myanmar, Thailand and Russia.
During the meetings, discussions covered the potential for projects in Myanmar's Dawei region to become a strategic hub for trade with regional countries; efforts to expedite projects that would benefit all three countries, including the invitation of investment; and cooperation between Myanmar and Thailand to address their growing energy demands. They also discussed the increasing global LNG trade, as LNG is compact and convenient to transport and is regarded as a clean energy source that plays an important role in the current energy transition.
In addition, the discussions focused on the possibility of transporting LNG from Russia to Myanmar and sharing it with Thailand to help address the energy challenges of both Myanmar and Thailand. As natural gas pipelines have already been laid from the Dawei region to other parts of Myanmar and Thailand, the existing infrastructure could provide a foundation for constructing an LNG terminal in Dawei. The meetings also discussed the fact that Myanmar and Russia have already signed an MoU on the export of LNG and other petroleum products to Myanmar, while Myanmar and Thailand are expected to sign an MoU on cooperation in the electricity and energy sectors in the near future. This was viewed as a timely opportunity to initiate trilateral energy trade among the three countries. The three sides also discussed plans for continued investment and implementation of projects in the Dawei region through cooperation among Myanmar, Thailand and Russia.
