Mon State Transport Minister orders closure of illegal railway crossings in Paung and Thaton townships along Yangon-Mawlamyine and TheinZaYat-Mawlamyine rail lines

The Mon State Minister for Electricity, Energy, Industry and Transport has instructed officials to close illegal railway crossings in Paung and Thaton townships along the Yangon-Mawlamyine railway and the TheinZaYat-Mawlamyine railway section, according to reports.

On the morning of September 17, Mon State Minister for Electricity, Energy, Industry and Transport U Zeya Oo conducted a field inspection in Paung and Thaton townships to prevent accidents caused by remaining illegal crossings along the Myanma Railways’ TheinZaYat-Mawlamyine section and to ensure that the illegal crossings are closed as soon as possible.

Minister U Zeya Oo instructed officials to raise public awareness of the dangers associated with using illegal railway crossings and to prevent accidents. He also urged ward and village administrators to conduct awareness-raising activities concerning the illegal crossings.

It is reported that there are 157 railway crossings between TheinZaYat Station and Mawlamyine Station along the Mon State section of the Yangon-Mawlamyine railway, but only 16 are officially designated crossings. A large number of illegal railway crossings are located in Paung Township, and fatalities and injuries caused by train accidents occur annually.

It was also reported that a DEMU train recently collided with a tractor and a motorcycle with a sidecar at an illegal railway crossing on the Yangon-Nay Pyi Taw railway line, killing one monk and three others.
