Eravati Sule Yangon Hotel temporarily closed for six months over Miss Grand Myanmar event
· Eleven Media Group Co., LtdThe Eravati Sule Yangon Hotel has reportedly been temporarily closed for six months after hosting the Miss Grand Myanmar competition before obtaining official permission, according to Yangon Region Hluttaw representative U Kyaw Min Htet .
“Currently, we have learned that the hotel has been ordered to close for six months. The reason is that they held an event without official approval. Normally, hotels are required to seek permission from the relevant authorities before hosting such events. Only after receiving approval are they allowed to proceed. However, the event was still under a pending approval process when the hotel accepted and hosted it. That is why we understand an order was issued to close the hotel for six months,” U Kyaw Min Htet said.
A person who recently inquired about staying at the hotel also said the hotel is not currently accepting guests due to major renovation work.
“We were informed that the hotel is undergoing major renovations and is not accepting bookings at the moment. They said they would announce the reopening date later,” the person said.
The The Eravati Sule Grand Yangon was opened in 2022 after the restoration of the former Customs House building, which was originally constructed in 1860.
The Miss Grand Myanmar competition, which recently drew widespread criticism, was held at the hotel on May 4.
During the competition, a contestant from Tachileik appeared on stage wearing a Buddhist nun’s robe, triggering strong backlash from the public.
Following the controversy, the Ministry of Religious Affairs announced that it had coordinated with the Ministry of Home Affairs to investigate and take action against those responsible for the competition, including the contestant who wore the nun’s attire.
In its statement, the Ministry of Religious Affairs said that contestant had worn Theravada Buddhist nun attire while participating in a model show segment of the competition. Videos of the performance later spread widely across social media platforms, prompting public criticism. The ministry stated that on May 5, 2026, it formally requested the Ministry of Home Affairs to investigate and take necessary action against the contestant and organizers connected to the event.
Miss Grand Myanmar has also announced that several remaining competition programs have been postponed indefinitely due to the current situation.
