ASEAN Foreign Ministers agree to hold online meeting with Myanmar Foreign Minister
· Eleven Media Group Co., LtdASEAN foreign ministers have agreed to hold an online meeting with Myanmar’s foreign minister in the near future, ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn said on Thursday, according to a report by The Straits Times .
The remarks were made during an interview held on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in the Philippines. The secretary-general said Myanmar wishes to restore normal relations with ASEAN member states, although some ASEAN countries want to see further progress in areas such as dialogue and humanitarian assistance before moving forward.
“We have reached an understanding among ASEAN foreign ministers to meet online and engage with Myanmar in the near future,” Kao Kim Hourn told, the report said.
The decision came after Thailand’s foreign minister said on Tuesday that he would propose measures aimed at increasing engagement between ASEAN and Myanmar.
Discussions are also continuing over the possibility of appointing a special envoy for Myanmar for a period longer than one year, although the ASEAN secretary-general did not provide further details.
