MAI Cuts Baggage Allowances Due to Jet Fuel Shortage

Myanmar Airways International (MAI) has announced that it is being forced to reduce baggage allowances for international passengers due to an ongoing shortage of Jet A1 aviation fuel in Myanmar.

The airline stated that the continued fuel supply issues have made it necessary to impose stricter baggage limits in order to maintain uninterrupted international flight operations. The decision is also intended to prevent further flight cancellations, similar to those that have already occurred in the domestic aviation market.

Under the new restrictions, Economy Class passengers are allowed one checked bag up to 20 kg; Business Class passengers are allowed one checked bag up to 30 kg; Hand-carry luggage is limited to a maximum of two bags totaling 7 kg; and Excess baggage is limited to a maximum of 5 kg.

MAI added that acceptance of additional baggage will depend on airport staff discretion.

Due to operational requirements, some baggage may be offloaded or refused at the airport. The airline said it will make every effort to deliver any unaccompanied baggage to passengers within 72 hours. Passengers who have pre-purchased excess baggage will receive refunds if their baggage cannot be transported.

The airline emphasized that it currently faces only two options: continue operating international flights on schedule or cancel them entirely. Canceling flights would significantly impact thousands of passengers who have already made travel arrangements, which is why the airline chose to proceed with reduced baggage allowances instead.

At present, due to fuel shortages, airlines in Myanmar have also been suspending some domestic flights.
