President meets Chinese Foreign Minister to boost sovereignty, border security and strategic cooperation

President U Min Aung Hlaing received a delegation led by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, at the Presidential Palace in Nay Pyi Taw on the afternoon of April 25.

During the meeting, the President expressed appreciation for the congratulatory message sent by Chinese President Xi Jinping shortly after his election. He also welcomed Mr. Wang Yi’s visit as the first by a Chinese Foreign Minister during his presidency and voiced hope that Myanmar-China relations and cooperation would continue to strengthen throughout his term.

In response, the Chinese Foreign Minister said that President Xi Jinping had conveyed his congratulations and best wishes on the election of Myanmar’s President. He noted that China’s prompt congratulatory message and the dispatch of a delegation to attend the inauguration ceremony reflected the importance China places on its relations with Myanmar and its people. He added that China believes Myanmar will achieve long-term development under the President’s leadership and will continue to accelerate the implementation of initiatives that benefit the socio-economic well-being of both countries and their peoples. He also affirmed that China will continue to stand by and support Myanmar on the international stage.

The two sides also discussed strengthening diplomatic relations and friendship between the two countries, advancing a community of shared interests, and China’s continued support for Myanmar in pursuing a development path suited to its national conditions with broad public backing. They reaffirmed support for Myanmar’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and efforts to ensure national stability, ethnic reconciliation, and social harmony. Discussions further covered continued bilateral coordination on border stability, trade facilitation, and internal peace, as well as China’s ongoing assistance in reconstruction efforts following the Mandalay earthquake. Both sides exchanged views on enhancing cooperation in international affairs and within the ASEAN community, including prospects for greater engagement. The two sides discussed the prospects for further enhancing Myanmar’s participation in ASEAN, as Myanmar successfully held a free and fair multiparty democratic general election and the government elected by the people continues to firmly advance the country on the path of democracy. They also discussed the prospects for further enhancing Myanmar’s participation in ASEAN, Myanmar’s support for the four recommendations made by Chinese President Xi Jinping for peace and stability in the Middle East, opportunities for enhancing cooperation in border trade, energy and mining, agriculture and technology, joint efforts to combat online gambling fraud, and accelerating the existing friendship and cooperation between the two countries and their peoples.

The meeting was attended by Union Minister for the Office of the President U Khin Maung Yi, Union Minister for Home Affairs Lt. Gen. Nyunt Win Swe, Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Tin Maung Swe, and Vice Chairman of the National Solidarity and Peacemaking Negotiation Committee (NSPNC) Lt. Gen. Yar Pyae. Also present were H.E. Ms. Ma Jia, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Myanmar, the Deputy Foreign Minister of China, and other officials.
