A great budget-friendly option that still delivers all the features you’d expect from a more expensive alternative

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

The Wyze BR30 smart bulb is one of the most affordable options for downlight fixtures, but it doesn’t feel stripped back. You still get full colour control, scene modes and scheduling features that you’d typically expect from much pricier bulbs. There were a couple of minor hiccups with occasional disconnections, but these were rare and easy to sort, so they don’t take much away from an otherwise strong option.

Reasons to buy

  • Easy to setup multiple bulbs at once
  • Very affordable when on sale
  • Good scheduling options
  • Compatible with Wyze cameras

Reasons to avoid

  • Bulbs can often disconnect

When upgrading your lighting to smart bulbs, finding options for standard screw fittings is usually pretty straightforward. However, things get a bit trickier with recessed fixtures like spotlights, especially if you’re trying to keep costs down. That’s where the Wyze BR30 bulb comes in.

Designed specifically for BR30 sockets, this smart bulb still manages to pack in plenty of features. You get full access to 16 million colours, a maximum brightness of 950 lumens, and all the core smart functionality you’d expect, including Alexa and Google Home compatibility.

You'll find my full review below, and why it's one of the easiest smart bulbs I’ve ever set up.

Price and availability

Launched in November 2022, the Wyze BR30 is available in either a two-pack or a four-pack, priced at $27.98 for a two-pack via Wyze's online store. That said, the packs are often on sale, and at the time of writing are available for around $5 per bulb.

It's important to know that Wyze is a US-based brand and doesn’t currently offer international shipping, which can make its products a little harder to get hold of outside the States. That said, you can sometimes find its devices through third-party retailers, with Amazon occasionally stocking items for UK buyers.

Set up and installation

Setting up the Wyze BR30 bulbs is about as easy as I’ve experienced with any smart lighting system. Not only can you set up multiple bulbs at once – saving you from repeating the same steps over and over – but the app also helpfully changes the colour of each bulb during setup, making it much easier to identify, name and group them correctly.

That said, smart home integration wasn’t quite as seamless. While some bulbs and groups worked perfectly straight away, others weren’t responsive at first. After a bit of digging, and manually creating a group in the Alexa app, I was able to get everything working reliably. It wasn’t a major issue, but it did feel like an extra step that shouldn’t really be necessary.

I also ran into a couple of instances where devices became unlinked and needed to be set up again. It only happened twice over a few months of use, but it was still a little frustrating when it did occur.

Design and features

The Wyze BR30 bulbs look just like standard BR30 downlight bulbs, which is a fitting that’s often overlooked by other smart lighting brand. That makes them a handy option if you want smart functionality without changing the look or compatibility of your existing fixtures.

The app itself is clean, uncluttered and easy to navigate, although there were a couple of small frustrations during use. While setting up voice control, I ended up creating more than one group for my living room lights, and once everything was working properly, I couldn’t find a way to delete the redundant group from the device list. It didn’t affect performance, but it did make the app feel a bit untidy and less intuitive than it could have been.

Performance

The lights performed well in everyday use, delivering a strong range of colours at up to 950 lumens and integrating smoothly with other bulbs in the range. They look particularly impressive when combined across multiple fixtures and paired with the preset Color Scenes such as Movie or Sunset, which can instantly change the mood of a room. Alongside these dynamic modes, there are also practical white light presets like Cozy, Bright, Energised and Night Light, which make them just as useful for day-to-day living.

Scheduling is handled through the Automations tab in the app, where you can set routines based on specific times or even sunrise and sunset, so you don’t have to keep adjusting settings as the seasons change. You can also build more advanced routines using shortcuts, geofencing or other Wyze devices as triggers. For example, lights can switch on or off when your phone enters or leaves a location, or be activated via motion detection through a Wyze camera.

There’s also a Vacation Mode, which randomly turns lights on and off during set periods when you’re away from home, helping to create the impression that someone is in.

Verdict

The Wyze BR30 bulb is a strong smart lighting option, offering a wide range of colour control, useful scheduling tools and automation support. Best of all, the packs come in at a very competitive price point and are frequently discounted, making them some of the most affordable smart bulbs you can buy.

In testing, there were a couple of minor reliability issues where a bulb became disconnected, but this was easy to resolve and only happened twice. While a little frustrating when it did occur, it’s not something that would be a deal-breaker in day-to-day use.

Alternatives to consider

There aren’t loads of options when it comes to smart bulbs for BR30 fixtures, but if you’re happy to spend a bit more, Philips Hue offers some great alternatives. The ecosystem is far more extensive too, although that does come at a cost, with an equivalent colour bulb setting you back around £50 or $60.

If you’re after something more affordable with a wider range of bulb styles, Govee is well worth a look. It offers BR30 bulbs at a similar price to Wyze, alongside options for candle-style fittings, Edison-style statement bulbs and standard E26 screw fixtures.
