Project Hail Mary Is Amazon MGM’s Best Box Office Debut Ever

by · VULTURE

Project Hail Mary brought in $80.5 million domestic for Amazon MGM over the weekend. That’s $5 mil more than what Melania reportedly cost, so things are looking up for ol’ Bezos. It’s Amazon MGM’s biggest opening ever, passing Creed III’s $58 million back in 2023. It’s also Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s best opening, beating The Lego Movie’s $69 million. The Ryan Gosling vehicle had the biggest opening for a non-franchise film since Oppenheimer, according to ABC News. Gosling cannot escape that guy, huh? Oppie, Project Hail Mary, and Jordan Peele’s Us are the only three non-franchise films to open over $70 million in the past decade.

Hoppers came in at number 2 with $18 million in its third week of release, followed by Dhurandhar: The Revenge at $9.57. The Hindi-language spy thriller just beat Ready or Not 2: Here I Come’s $9.1 million debut. The Colleen Hoover joint Reminders of Him closed out the top 5 with $8 million. But don’t worry, Hoov-heads, Verity is just around the corner, soaked in blood. And it’s for Amazon MGM.
