George Lucas Says Bello to a Career in Voice Acting
by Bethy Squires · VULTUREIs it any surprise the creator of the Ewoks likes the Minions? The Star Wars auteur will have a cameo in the upcoming Minions & Monsters, per Collider. And he’s doing out of pure love for the game. The game of Minions. “I had this privilege of meeting George [Lucas] about two years ago, and what led to my meeting him is how much he loves Illumination movies, and specifically Despicable Me, and even more specifically, the Minions,” Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri said. “It was such a thrill to learn that and then to share it with the team.” Quickly a plan was formulated to get Georgie Porgie to do a voice in the next movie. “An idea for a character came up out of the story,” Meledandri continued, “and I just said, ‘Well, what if we could get George?’ And they’re like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ I had no idea, but I got such a fast yes.”
What role Lucas plays has not yet been divulged, but the film takes place during the creature feature-heavy days of early Hollywood — exactly the same era of Da Movies that inspired Lucas to make Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Maybe he’ll play a beret-wearing director straight out of John Travolta’s dreams. Or a lowly grip? A carpenter, like pal Harrison Ford? Regardless, Lucas hopes this is just the beginning of his link-up with Bob and Co., according to Meledandri: “I saw him recently, and he’s already talking to me about the role he wants to do next in the next Minions movie.”
