Marcia Lucas, Oscar Winning Editor, Dead at 80
by Alejandra Gularte · VULTUREMarcia Lucas, Academy Award-winning film editor, died at the age of 80, AP News reports. Her attorney, Deidre Von Rock, confirmed that she died from metastatic cancer on Wednesday in Rancho Mirage, California, surrounded by loved ones. “Marcia will be remembered as a brilliant storyteller, a trailblazer for women in film, a loving mother and grandmother, a generous host, and a loyal friend whose humor and sparkle filled every room she entered. Her influence on film is indelible, but those who knew her best will remember the way she made life feel more vivid, more beautiful, more fun, and more full of love,” the family statement shared. “Her work was known for its emotional intelligence, rhythm, and humanity — a rare ability to find the truth of a scene and bring heart, momentum, and clarity to the screen.”
Lucas, who was married to George Lucas from 1969 to 1983, was an instrumental part of the New Hollywood era of film; she’s edited movies by Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, and George Lucas. She edited George’s first three films (and was nominated for Best Editing for American Graffiti) and Scorsese’s Taxi Driver. Alongside Paul Hirsch and Richard Chew, Marcia won an Academy Award for Best Film Editing for Star Wars in 1978. She is responsible for keeping sweet and unexpected moments in the film. “When the little mouse robot comes up when Harrison and I are delivering Chewbacca to the prison and he roars at it and it screams, sort of, and runs away, George wanted to cut that and Marcia insisted that he keep it,” Mark Hamill shared in a 2005 interview, per the New York Post.
She reflected on her relationship with the Star Wars creator in a 2022 interview with Icons Unearthed. “We are getting up there in age,” she explained. “Unfortunately, when you get married, you always believe you’re going to be the old people sitting on the bark bench—but we didn’t get there. I don’t think he’s forgiven me for leaving. I don’t think he ever will.”
