Don’t Quit on a Friday Night Lights Reboot

The highs, lows, and woes of high school football might be hitting the next generation. A new version of Friday Night Lights is reportedly in the works at Universal Television. But don’t except Taylor Kitsch to be walking around the school hallways. In 2022, Kitsch told Variety he’d never do a reboot or revival series: “You may see it, but I will not be a part of it. I’m done. I’m good.” Well, good thing the in-development series is focusing on a new group of football hopefuls. Original FNL executive producers Jason Katims, Peter Berg (who directed the 2004 movie), and Brian Grazer are reportedly working on the reboot with new characters still with clear eyes and full hearts, obviously. At least the team will have Zach Gilford’s approval; Maybe he can come back as an art teacher if they decide to have the original cast return just for funsies.

It’s the first time a Friday Night Lights TV series has tried to be rebooted, but can’t say the same for the movie version. In 2018, Universal considered reimagining the 2004 film starring Billy Bob Thornton, and then a couple of years later, Glazer shared an idea for another movie remake based in a border town in Texas, but neither ever came to fruition. Maybe the third time is the charm?
