Comcast Is Spinning Off NBCUniversal Into a New Company

by · VULTURE

Media consolidation is so over; de-consolidation is my new best friend. Comcast is spinning off its entertainment and technology divisions into separate companies. In entertainment, the new, independent NBCUniversal will include the Universal Pictures movie studio, NBC, Telemundo, NBC News, Peacock, Bravo, the theme-parks division, and Sky, which is a British TV broadcaster Comcast acquired in 2018. Comcast, meanwhile, will focus on its broadcast and wireless services. Brian Roberts, current co-CEO and chairperson of Comcast, will be involved in the leadership of both companies, while Mike Cavanagh, the other CEO, will take on leadership of NBCU. The separation is expected to take a year, after which time Comcast will still have a 19.9 percent share of NBCU stock for another year.

“I’m personally thrilled to continue leading NBCUniversal into the future,” Cavanagh said in a statement. “With our iconic brands and theme parks, leading franchises and incredible creative talent, we are well-positioned for long-term value creation.”

It is the second time the Comcast umbrella has spun a portion of its holdings into a new company. In 2024, NBCU revealed it was turning the majority of its cable networks (except Bravo) into a new company, now called Versant. Of course, the real question for the majority of Americans will be, What does this change in Peacock leadership mean for Love Island?
