Devil Wears Prada 2 Lands Fatality on Mortal Kombat II in a Fierce Box Office Battle

by · VULTURE

Round 1, fight! Mortal Kombat II and The Devil Wears Prada 2 duked it out to be the number one sequel at the box office this weekend. And in a real nail-bitter, Stanley Tucci TKO’d Luke Cage Sunday morning. Mortal Kombat II’s advantage was that it’s a new movie, so plenty of people would want to watch it, especially if they’re fans of the game. However, this was Mother’s Day weekend, so it was a golden opportunity to watch Miranda Priestly slay another day.

Both movies were projected to earn $42 million domestically this weekend, with Prada’s two-week box office approaching $141 million overall. But Prada’s second-week drop off was a scant 44 percent, earning a top spot for the staff of Runway at $43 mil. Mortal Kombat II only earned $40 million, in comparison.

Meanwhile, Michael keeps moonwalking along. The biopic grabbed another $36.5 million domestically this weekend, and is now the highest-earning music biopic of all time in North America. Its $238.9 million domestic has surpassed Bohemian Rhapsody’s lifetime domestic total of $216.7 million. BoRhap is still the king of the global musical biopic at $911 million, but with a three-week global total of $570 million, there’s still time for the King of Pop to top. Michael is the third movie this year to pass half a billie, after Project Hail Mary and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
