Toy Story 5 Is 2026’s Biggest Opening Yet
by Bethy Squires · VULTURESorry to Bubbles, there’s a new fave CGI creation of 2026. Toy Story 5 had the year’s best opening box office, with $160 million in the U.S. alone. Globally, the film opened at $312 million, the second-best worldwide opening weekend Pixar has ever seen (Inside Out 2 beat it with $384 million). Kids may be glued to their devices, but parents can still drag them to the movies when they want to.
At number 2 this weekend was Disclosure Day, which saw another $17 mil of business in its second week. Spielberg movies usually have pretty long legs, but the 62 percent drop-off is somewhat concerning, especially considering numbers 3 and 4 at the box office this week. Obsession and Backrooms are still have the box office longevity of a 90’s movie, going strong 6 and 4 weeks into their release life. Compare that to alleged tentpole movies like Masters of the Universe and The Mandalorian and Grogu, which are pulling considerably less in their later days at the box office. Finishing the top 5 is Scary Movie, holding on with $7.3 million for the Wayans’ return to the franchise. Toy Story 5 is kind of a horror movie. Lilypad is essentially a T-1000 for toys, so this opening kind of lines up with Spooky Summer when you think about it.
