Ringo Starr appears to have confirmed that Irish actor Barry Keoghan will play him in Sam Mendes’ four-part Beatles biopic.

In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, the iconic drummer hinted that Keoghan would portray him in Mendes' ambitious project, which will consist of four separate movies, one from each Beatle’s point of view.

"I think it's great," Starr said when asked about his reaction to Keoghan’s rumoured casting. "I believe he's somewhere taking drum lessons, and I hope not too many."

In February, it was revealed that Mendes would helm all four parts of the "Beatles Cinematic Universe."

The Oscar-winning filmmaker is set to direct four separate theatrical films — one on each of the members of music’s most famous and enduring band. Their story will be told from their beginnings in Liverpool through Beatlemania in the 1960s and their enduring legacy.

The Skyfall director said he was "honoured to be telling the story of the greatest rock band of all time". He added that he was "excited to challenge the notion of what constitutes a trip to the movies".

Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and the families of John Lennon and George Harrison have all granted permission and music rights for the four films, marking the first time that The Beatles and their company Apple Corps have granted full life story and music rights for a scripted film.

While no official casting announcements have as yet been made, reports emerged in June claiming that Keoghan was being lined up to play Ringo Starr, while his fellow Irish actor Paul Mescal was rumoured to be taking on the role of Paul McCartney.

“I would love to be involved, but there’s nothing set in stone,” Mescal recently told GQ.

Recent reports suggest that Mescal's Gladiator II co-star Joseph Quinn could play George Harrison, with The Iron Claw star Harris Dickinson rumoured to be portraying cast as John Lennon.

The ambitious four-part film event is expected to start production in 2025 and be released throughout 2027.
