Katie Taylor gets glimpse of how Amanda Serrano rematch will be different to all her other fights

by · Irish Mirror

Katie Taylor has been cool, calm and collected in Texas this week, but says she is ready for "all out war" on Friday night, as is her opponent Amanda Serrano.

Both fighters got in the ring for their open workouts in the early hours of Tuesday morning Irish time and they will come face-to-face at the final press conference on Wednesday night before Thursday's weigh-in.

Speaking in the ring after hitting pads with her American coach Ross Enamait, Taylor predicted another classic encounter at the Dallas Cowboys' AT&T Stadium.

Serrano then echoed the comments made by her Irish opponent after her workout some 15 minutes or so afterwards and the one word both fighters used was "war".

"The first fight with Amanda was obviously epic, I know the second fight is going to be even more epic so I can't wait," said Taylor. "There's not going to be a lot of feeling out in the second fight, we know each other so well now we spent ten rounds together so we're just going to go straight into an all out war again on Friday night.

"The last time it was fight of the year and this time I can't expect anything less."

Serrano added: "I hope it's going to be a fight. Katie's a warrior. She might start off boxing but once I hit her, I know she's going to come to fight. That's who Katie is. It's going to be a war. The fans are going to be the winners come Friday night."

On an evening of loud rap and dance music at the Toyota Music Factory in Irving, Taylor calmed the mood by walking to the ring to The Script's Hall Of Fame before working out to Coldplay's A Sky Full of Stars.

But she perhaps got a glimpse of just how different Friday's fight will be to her other bouts in America as there was noticeably hardly any, if any, Irish fans in the crowd and certainly no tricolours.

Taylor is used to being roared on by large Irish supports in east coast cities like New York, Boston and Philadelphia, as well as at venues in Ireland and the UK, but Friday's event looks set to be made up of Mike Tyson and Jake Paul fans, with the latter's backers presumably going to be also cheering on Serrano, who the YouTuber-turned boxer manages.

However, the 23-1 Taylor doesn't see it being an issue, stating: "I think once I step in there that really doesn't matter. It's just myself and Amanda in the ring and your focus is just completely on the person in front of you.

"It doesn't matter if you're boxing in front of 100,000 Irish fans or ten Irish fans, it doesn't really matter. I'm there to win and I don't think the crowd is going to effect my performance either way."

Taylor also took the opportunity to thank her fans from her amateur career right through to now when being interviewed in the ring, but says she hasn't really had the opportunity to sit down and reflect on what she has done for women's boxing.

"I don't really sit down and think about it much," she revealed.

"Maybe when I retire from the sport I'll look back on it and say that was an amazing moment, I'm so glad that I had the chance to inspire so many people but when you're in the middle of your career you're just focussing obviously on the next fight and what you have to do.

"I'm just so focussed on fight week. I don't get the chance to sit back and look back but I am very, very grateful for the opportunities that I've had."

The Bray native's super-lightweight world titles she won off Chantelle Cameron will be on the line on Friday night against Serrano, who has held world championship belts in seven different weight classes.

The Puerto Rican had Taylor in all sorts of trouble in the fifth round of their first fight and is confident she can cause the defending champion similar problems again.

"We train to come out every round just like that so even the sixth round I came out just as hard and this time I'm ready for every minute, every second of the fight," she said.

"Coming into this fight I'm a lot more confident than I was for the first fight knowing what I did, knowing that I hurt her multiple times in that fight and now she knows how it feels to lose, which means she's going to come out not wanting to lose again and so am I.

"I don't want to lose to Katie Taylor and I'm just going to fight with everything I have."
