Forecast in Delhi and other parts of India: Several areas in the city recorded over 200 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. IMD predicted extremely heavy rainfall over the Konkan region, Goa, and South Gujarat in the next four to five days, and issued a red alert for the same.

The rain deficit: While June recorded a 40 per cent rainfall deficit, the IMD has predicted July precipitation to remain below normal, less than 94 per cent of the long-period average. The weather department had predicted 92 per cent rainfall for June, but the month brought in just about 60 per cent of normal rains, making it the fifth driest June since 1901 — the year from which rainfall records are available in India.

IMD's Colaba radar defunct for 2 weeks

Over the past four days, Mumbai is witnessing heavy rainfall and earlier on Wednesday (July 1), the city had woken up to a red nowcast warning.

The India Meteorological Department's (IMD) S-band Doppler radar at Colaba has remained non-functional for nearly two weeks owing to a technical malfunction. Officials maintained that the technical breakdown of the Colaba radar has not impacted the weather forecasting system since the IMD is using its secondary Doppler radar located at Veravali in the Palghar district of Maharashtra for detecting and forecasting meteorological activities.

Powai lake starts overflowing, but stock significantly low in 7 reservoirs supplying water to Mumbai

Amid heavy rains across Mumbai, Powai Lake in the city's eastern suburbs started overflowing on Wednesday morning, even as the stock in the seven reservoirs supplying drinking water to the metropolis remained abysmally low compared to last year.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said Powai Lake, one of the key artificial lakes within its jurisdiction, started overflowing at around 5.30 am. "With a water holding capacity of 545 crore litres, the lake's water is used only for industrial purposes," the BMC said in a post on X.

The excess water from the lake flows into the Mithi river, which drains into the Arabian Sea at Mahim. PTI
