Jantar Mantar Protest Live Updates: PM Modi announces fast-track courts to ensure swift justice in paper leak cases

The Delhi Metro on Thursday announced that 16 Metro stations in Central Delhi will remain shut for a second day. The CJP has alleged that internet services were shut down around Jantar Mantar.

The protest at Jantar Mantar by the Cockroach Janta Party continued on Thursday even as the protesters remained resolute in their demand calling for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The gridlock in the Parliament over the paper leak issue showed no signs of abating with the government signalling it was ready to discuss the issue in the Parliament. The Opposition, meanwhile, remaining firm in their demand for the minister’s resignation.

A CJP delegation was scheduled to meet the government on Wednesday. However, the meeting couldn’t take place as the CJP delegation disagreed with the Centre’s proposal of holding the meeting at JP Nadda’s place. The health minister said there was no meeting on Wednesday, but added that the CJP delegation have submitted their points in writing.

Activist Sonam Wangchuk remains on hunger strike at the Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. The government on Tuesday reached out to the activist, with union ministers Nadda and Jitendra Singh holding a meeting with Wangchuk. In a statement to the ministers on Wednesday, Wangchuk put forward his demands to end his strike and CJP protest, which included compensation for the families of students who died by suicide and a meaningful discussion in Parliament, and consideration on the resignation of the Education Minister.

PM Modi announces fast-track courts to ensure swift justice in paper leak cases

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced setting up fast-track courts to ensure justice for those involved in paper leak cases. In a social media post on X, the prime minister promised stringent punishment for those involved in such crimes.

"Nothing is more important than the welfare and future of our youth! We have decided to set up fast-track courts to ensure swift and stringent punishment for those involved in paper leaks. Have directed the concerned authorities and officials to take all necessary steps in this regard. This continues our series of steps for safeguarding the interests of students. Those who try to harm the future of our youth will not be spared," PM Modi said in the social media post.

‘Lathis with nails’: High Court seeks police response on Delhi protest ‘brutalities’

Declining to accept the Delhi Police argument that aggrieved protesters must individually pursue action against alleged brutalities and excessive use of force during July 20 march, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday agreed to hear two public interest litigations on the issue.

“Is it a case of some isolated individual incidents? Perhaps no. If it was an unlawful assembly as you say, subject to further submissions and records, there is a law on how to deal with it. There is a Supreme Court judgment (that prescribes circumstances and extent of use of force by police). If these issues are being raised in this PIL, how can you say every individual should go and lodge an FIR? If it is an isolated incident, you would have been correct in (saying), approach the magistrate and police station or lodge a private complaint, but this is not such an incident as is being asserted. We are not saying they (petitioners) are correct. Therefore, we will only ask you to file your responses,” Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya observed.

The bench of Chief Justice Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia directed the police to file responses within four weeks and to preserve video footage and other records as per the Standard Operating Procedure.

'People brought from outside to disrupt protest': Abhijeet Dipke

Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke on Wednesday alleged that people from outside were being sent to Jantar Mantar to disrupt the protest. He claimed that people, linked to BJP, were pelting stones and the police brought truck of stones near the protest site.

Speaking to ANI, Dipke said: "People are being sent from outside to deliberately disrupt the protest. We have been sitting here for a month. No such incident has happened in a month. But now, as this protest has grown, goons are being sent from outside by the BJP to deliberately incite people. These are the people from the BJP who are pelting stones. The police bring trucks of stones here. BJP goons come, they pelt stones and then defame the people of CJP."

Sonam Wangchuk opens a window as Centre steps up efforts to resolve crisis

Activist Sonam Wangchuk on Wednesday said he would end his fast and ask the students to “halt the movement for now and enter into a dialogue with the government” if it fulfils its assurances to him and does not press for legal action against the protesters.

In a letter to Union Ministers J P Nadda and Jitendra Singh, Wangchuk without insisting on the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, said the ministers had assured him that the government would consider providing “adequate compensation for the families of the students who had committed suicide following the examination paper leak” and “a meaningful discussion in Parliament to ensure accountability including consideration of the resignation” of Pradhan.

The letter comes a day after the two ministers had come to meet the fasting activist in the Gurugram hospital.

400 booked, 13 FIRs registered in Mumbai in five days for 'unlawful' protests

The Mumbai police have registered 13 FIRs between July 18 and July 22 in connection with the ongoing protests in the city. The cases were registered on charges of unlawful assembly and violation of prohibitory orders, according to PTI.

The cases have been registered at different police stations, and notices were issued to those named in the FIRs. A total of 400 people have been booked. Authorities said that while demonstrations were staged at various places, including Shivaji Park, Chaityabhoomi, Chembur and Shiv Sena Bhavan, no permission had been granted for the protests.

16 Delhi Metro stations closed for second day due to 'security reasons'

Sixteen Delhi Metro stations, including Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat, Mandi House, ITO and Khan Market, remain closed for a second day on Thursday morning due to security reasons, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said in a social media post.

The development comes as the crowd swelled at the ongoing Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar.

"Lok Kalyan Marg, Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk, Ramakrishna Ashram Marg, Barakhamba Road, Supreme Court, Seva Teerth, Janpath, Mandi House, Central Secretariat, ITO, Delhi Gate, Indraprastha, Khan Market, Jor Bagh and Shivaji Stadium metro stations have been closed till further instructions," the DMRC said in a post on X.

CJP protest at Jantar Mantar continues on Wednesday, more protesters pour in

Three days after the violent crackdown of the 'Chalo Sansad' march, the chants grew louder and the crowd thicker at Jantar Mantar with fresh groups of protesters pouring into the protest site from across the country. The sit-in continued on Thursday, with the protestors resolute in their demands, calling for Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation.

Volunteers were seen on Wednesday directing the protesters towards seating areas and distributed drinking water and food packets as more groups joined the gathering. The Cockroach Janta Party on Wednesday alleged that internet services were shut down around Jantar Mantar where its supporters have been staging a sit-in.
