Jharkhand Students Protest Live Updates: BJP leaders detained outside CM’s residence, students march towards assembly

The security has been tightened outside the Jharkhand state assembly even as JPSC aspirants started gathering for the scheduled gherao of Vidhan Sabha today.

A high drama ensued in Ranchi amid the ongoing protest over alleged irregularities in government examinations. Several BJP leaders, including Aditya Sahu and Babulal Marandi, were detained after a sit-in outside Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s residence seeking CBI probe into exam irregularities. The BJP leaders’ sit-in comes even as protesters marched towards the Jharkhand assembly in Ranchi for the peaceful gherao.

Student leader Ravindra Paswan earlier said the march would begin at 10:30 AM, adding that it will be conducted in a peaceful and constitutional manner. The Jharkhand Police has imposed prohibitory orders around the assembly premises and made elaborate security arrangements across the city. The Ranchi authorities have made an appeal to agitating students to refrain from participating in any kind of aggressive demonstrations. It also cautioned against violence and illegal activities during the protest march to the assembly.

The march to the state assembly comes a day after the Jharkhand government agreed to cancel three examinations, including the preliminary examination of the 14th JPSC Combined Civil Services. Three members of the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) also resigned on Sunday. The talks saw two major factions of the students’ movement, besides representatives associated with AISA, meeting the government panel that comprised ministers Deepika Pandey Singh, Sanjay Prasad Yadav and Chamra Linda besides Sonu. The two factions of protesters are JPSC-JSSC Reform Manch and the JPSC-JSSC Abhyarthi Nyay Manch.

The Jharkhand Police has imposed prohibitory orders around the assembly premises and made elaborate security arrangements across Ranchi ahead of Monday's 'Vidhan Sabha March'. Officials said all necessary security arrangements are being made in view of the proposed picketing at the state assembly.

"In view of the possibility of unrest during the students' proposed march to the state assembly, the police administration has been put on alert," ADG (Headquarters) Manoj Kaushik said. Kaushik urged the protesters to protest in a "peaceful and disciplined" manner.

JPSC protesters to march to Vidhan Sabha at 10:30 AM

JPSC protesters are set to march and gherao the Jharkhand Vidhan Sabha at 10:30 AM today. Speaking on the march, student leader Ravindra Paswan said the march to the Vidhan Sabha will be conducted in a peaceful and constitutional manner.

"Students will start gathering there at 9:00 AM. The march will commence between 10:30 and 11:00 AM, entirely peacefully and constitutionally. I urge all students and the general public to maintain peace and adhere to constitutional norms," he told ANI.

"Students from every district of Jharkhand are arriving for today's protest; there will be a massive turnout. There is a possibility that anti-social elements might be present. In light of this, I appeal to the state police administration to assist us in ensuring the movement remains peaceful and successful," he added.
