You can build custom widgets with Gemini Intelligence

With Create My Widget, you can build entirely custom widgets just by describing what you want using natural language. For example, if you're a meal prepper, just ask Create My Widget to "Suggest three high-protein meal prep recipes every week," and watch as it builds a custom dashboard you can add and resize right on your home screen. Or if you’re a cyclist who only cares about wind speed and rain, you can create a weather widget that surfaces those exact stats.

The Android Show is almost here

If Google sticks to the format it used in 2025, this event is likely to be pre-recorded and much shorter than the company’s main developer presentations.

Last year’s edition moved at a brisk pace, wrapping up in just 23 minutes, which made it feel more like a focused product update than a sprawling keynote. That shorter runtime allowed Google to highlight its biggest announcements quickly without the longer technical deep dives or extended demos typically reserved for larger events.

For comparison, the main keynote at Google I/O 2025 was a far more substantial production, running for nearly two hours.

New Gemini model?

Ahead of the pre-I/O Android Show, Google is widely expected to announce Gemini 4.0 with a major overhaul in capabilities, especially in the form of agentic AI features on Android devices.

Last year, Google brought Gemini to cars and Android TV, along with new features such as Gemini notebooks. Hence, it might be safe to assume that Google will spend a lot of time talking about AI during today’s keynote, specifically how Gemini’s agentic abilities are evolving on Android.

Android 17 Beta 4 released weeks ago

The last scheduled Android 17 beta was released by Google earlier this month, for testers with special access to play around with it ahead of the official release of the upcoming operating system.

The Android 17 Beta 4 received minor updates aimed to improve navigation such as resizing split screen app pairs using physical up or down arrows, and the grab handle revealing two arrows that can be used to move an app up or down in a split screen arrangement.

Social media users also flagged a new biometric authentication dialog style with an “X” button in the top-right corner of the window. In addition, copied text in the Android keyboard overlay is now previewed in white instead of black.

These all seem miniscule user-facing tweaks to improve mouse and trackpad support. That said, these beta changes are not confirmed and we will have to wait for the stable rollout of Android 17 to know for sure, which reports estimate will be sometime in June this year.

Android 17 and new AI features expected at Google’s Android Show

Google’s upcoming Android Show is expected to focus on the official reveal of Android 17, along with new AI-powered features and interface upgrades. A teaser video sparked rumours about an iOS-style “Liquid Glass” redesign due to its translucent Android robot animation, though Android ecosystem president Sameer Samat denied those claims.

The event is still expected to showcase visual improvements, Gemini AI integrations, and new multitasking tools like movable “app bubbles” that function similarly to floating desktop windows. Google may also offer a first look at “Aluminium OS,” a PC-focused Android version that is expected to blend elements of Android and ChromeOS.

Google Android Show 2026 teaser

Earlier this month, Sameer Samat, the president of Google’s Android ecosystem, posted the official teaser for The Android Show: I/O edition, which showed the green droid jumping around and pulling a light switch. It then appears to turn transparent, a visual that is being used elsewhere in I/O teasers.

When some users expressed concern that Google might be about to implement a "liquid glass" effect like Apple, Samat flatly denied it and said, "Don't worry. Not happening!"

E2E encrypted RCS messaging for Android, iPhone users

For years, communication between Android and iPhone users remained noticeably outdated because Apple refused to adopt RCS support. This led to common issues such as broken group chats, poor-quality photo and video sharing, and missing modern messaging features.

But the divide is now getting smaller.

A day ahead of The Android Show: I/O edition, Google announced that Android and iOS users are finally getting one of the most requested messaging features: end-to-end encrypted texting between the two platforms. Read more here.

At last year’s Android Show, Google showed off the new Material 3 Expressive design language alongside new Gemini features like screen sharing.

It also announced new device-specific features to its Advanced Protection programme, which is designed to protect public figures such as politicians and journalists from various digital threats.

A USB protection feature was unveiled, allowing only charging from a new USB connection when the device is locked.

Google announced Gemini rolling out in Android TV to answer quick questions and launch streaming apps. Gemini coming to cars, to help drivers find locations, summarise text messages or use Gemini Live for conversational questions, was also announced last year.

Google Android Show 2026: What to expect

Google typically hosts the Android-focused event before I/O so that it can focus on Gemini and AI-related announcements during the annual developer conference.

We are sure to get a preview of the next Android version today. Based on news reports, Android 17 is expected to come with a new multitasking UI for Android devices and some new options for screen recording, among others.

It is also likely that Google will share more information on Aluminum OS, its effort to unify Android and ChromeOS into a single platform. The company might also share new information about Android XR. But if we are to see any new hardware, it is more likely to be revealed at I/O 2026 later this month, and it is likely to be Android XR-related than something new from the Pixel family

Google could also introduce Gemini 4 upgrades for better on-device experiences, along with other new Android features.
