Ghana face Nigeria in WAFU B U-20 Championship opener
by Ayeh Offei-Akoto · MyNewsGh.comGhana’s Black Satellites will begin their pursuit of regional glory on Monday, July 27, 2026, when they face defending champions Nigeria in a crucial Group B opening match at the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.
The highly anticipated clash will take place at the Lycée Scientifique Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 14:00 GMT (2pm local time), as two of West Africa’s most successful youth football nations battle for an early advantage.
For Ghana, the fixture provides an opportunity to make a strong statement and seek revenge for their defeat in the last edition’s final, where the Black Satellites lost 2-1 to the Flying Eagles in Lomé, Togo.
Head coach Maxwell Konadu and his players have been preparing intensely for the tournament, arriving in Côte d’Ivoire last Friday and completing two training sessions in Yamoussoukro ahead of the opening fixture.
Konadu has expressed confidence in his squad’s readiness, insisting the team is mentally and tactically prepared to compete against the reigning champions.
While the WAFU B U-20 Championship serves as the qualifying tournament for the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, Ghana’s participation at the continental tournament is already secured as hosts.
