France captain Kylian Mbappé has moved to the top of the race for the Golden Boot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup following his goal in Les Bleus’ 2-0 quarter-final victory over Morocco.

Mbappé scored his eighth goal of the tournament as France booked a place in the semi-finals on Thursday.

The 27-year-old missed an opportunity to open the scoring in the first half after his penalty was saved by Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

However, Mbappé made amends in the 60th minute, curling a superb strike beyond Bounou to put France ahead.

Ousmane Dembélé doubled France’s advantage six minutes later to seal the victory.

Mbappé is now level with Argentina captain Lionel Messi on eight goals but leads the Golden Boot race thanks to his two assists at the tournament.

Norway striker Erling Haaland sits third on the scoring chart with seven goals.
