England recorded their second-best finish at a World Cup after beating France in an exciting third-place play-off in Miami, with Bukayo Saka scoring a hat-trick.

Declan Rice gave England an early lead with a long-range goal in the third minute. Ezri Konsa made it 2-0 with a header 15 minutes later, before Saka scored twice before half-time.

France captain Kylian Mbappe scored two goals to take his total to 10 at the 2026 World Cup, moving two goals ahead of Argentina’s Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot. Between Mbappe’s two goals, he also set up Bradley Barcola to score.

France fought back to make it 4-3 by the 66th minute in a fast and exciting match. Michael Olise then missed a good chance before Saka completed his hat-trick by scoring a penalty.

Ousmane Dembele scored his sixth goal of the tournament in the 96th minute, but Jude Bellingham responded soon after with his seventh goal of the competition to seal England’s victory.

England, who rested top scorer Harry Kane, finished the tournament in third place.
