Our System Is Killing Respect For Local Coaches – Odartey Lamptey
by Stephen Zoure · MyNewsGh.comFormer Black Stars player Nii Odartey Lamptey has blamed Ghana’s football system for what he describes as the growing disrespect towards local coaches, arguing that the way they are treated has eroded confidence in their abilities.
Speaking on Asempa FM, Mr. Lamptey said local coaches are frequently overlooked because they are perceived to lack experience, even though many successful international managers began their careers coaching youth teams.
“They are always saying that they do not have the experience. When Guardiola was given Barcelona, where was he coming from? Lampard, where was he coming from? They were Under-20 and Under-19 coaches,” he said.
According to him, the negative perception of Ghanaian coaches has filtered down to players, many of whom no longer accord local coaches the respect they deserve because of how football authorities and clubs treat them.
“When we come to Ghana, we have the notion that local players do not respect local coaches, and this is influenced by the way the local coaches are treated,” he stated.
Mr. Lamptey also dismissed suggestions that local coaches simply need to upgrade themselves, pointing out that professional coaching courses have become prohibitively expensive for many Ghanaian coaches.
“The claim that the coaches should upgrade themselves; this is also all about money. Do you know how much a course costs now? It’s huge,” he said.
He warned that unless greater investment is made in developing and empowering indigenous coaches, Ghana’s football development will continue to suffer.
“We are going backwards in football,” he added.
