Cristiano Ronaldo suspended, fined for leaving Portugal training camp
by Ayeh Offei-Akoto · MyNewsGh.comPortugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension and a €255 fine by the Portuguese Football Federation following an investigation into his departure from the national team camp in Copenhagen.
The federation’s disciplinary committee found the 41-year-old Al Nassr forward responsible for leaving without permission. The decision was made under the federation’s rules on players’ duties when representing the national team.
The case began after Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp in Denmark late last month, ahead of Nations League group matches against Denmark and Norway.
Under the federation’s rules, players who miss or leave training camps, matches, or official national team activities without a valid reason can face suspensions of between one and six months, as well as fines. Ronaldo received a 30-day suspension, which falls within the lower end of that range.
The suspension temporarily prevents Ronaldo from being called up to the national team while the federation reviews its procedures for handling squad discipline.
With the punishment now issued, attention will turn to how Portugal’s coaching staff and federation officials handle future squad selections ahead of upcoming international matches.
Ronaldo has made 234 appearances for Portugal and scored 146 goals, making him the country’s record appearance holder and leading goalscorer. He also captained the team to victory at Euro 2016 and has won two Nations League titles with Portugal.
