If You Help to Spread Incendiary Content, It Is an Offence – Felix Kwakye Ofosu Warns
by Miss Naa · MyNewsGh.comMinister of State for Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu has defended the arrest and remand of senior nursing officer Salomey Awiti Baffoe, saying helping to circulate content capable of inciting people can amount to an offence.
“Yes, if you help to spread incendiary content, it is an offence,” he said on Joy FM in an interview.
He explained that the government draws a distinction between criticism, insults and statements that could threaten public peace.
“There’s a difference between insulting the President or saying unpleasant things about the President or criticising the government and saying things that have the potential to breach the peace,” he said.
Kwakye Ofosu said law enforcement agencies have a duty to investigate statements that could amount to threats or incitement, regardless of which government is in power.
“When you do that, law enforcement anywhere in the world will take you on and take you through due process,” he added.
His comments after Salomay was remanded for two weeks by the Adenta Circuit Court over links to the Ghana Jollof TikTok account and allegations of abetting the publication and circulation of false news. She has pleaded not guilty.
Kwakye Ofosu stressed that the court would ultimately determine whether she is guilty.
“In any event, a court will determine whether the person is guilty or not,” he said.
He added that the government was not concerned about vulgar language or criticism of President John Mahama, but about content that could potentially provoke unrest.
“There is no sane jurisdiction in this world where that is permitted,” he said.
