The annual event is widely recognised as one of West Africa’s most unique cultural festivals. It serves as a living heritage celebration, deeply connected to the history of Afro-Brazilian returnee communities that settled on Lagos Island.
This year’s carnival featured elaborate costumed parades, traditional music, masquerade performances, and vibrant community displays.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Governor Sanwo-Olu called the carnival a dynamic expression of culture and identity.

“Today, I was at the Fanti Carnival at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos Island and it was a lively showcase of culture, with each group bringing its own colours, choreography and strong sense of identity,” he wrote.
