Balming Tiger’s 'Gongbu' named among NPR’s best albums of 2026 so far
by hjang · allkpopBalming Tiger is receiving growing international attention as its second full-length album ‘Gongbu’ has been selected by U.S. public radio NPR as one of the best albums of the first half of 2026.
According to the group’s agency CAM on July 3, 'Gongbu' was included in NPR Music’s list titled "The albums and songs of 2026 that we love the most (so far)," which highlights the most recommended albums and tracks selected by NPR editors and critics. This year’s selection was made by 12 NPR Music hosts, critics, and editors, with 'Gongbu' recognized among the standout albums of the period.
Released on May 19, 'Gongbu' is a concept album set in a fictional research institute called 'Gongbu Korea', exploring themes of human dreams and the unconscious. The project combines sound design, visual identity, music video direction, and live performance into a unified narrative world.
The album’s 14 tracks feature contributions from all 11 members of Balming Tiger, including Omega Sapien, sogumm, Mudd the student, bj wnjn, Leesuho, Unsinkable, and San Yawn, reflecting the group’s collective creative identity.
NPR Music's Robin Hilton praised 'Gongbu', writing that listeners "don't need to speak a word of Korean to get lost in the wild world of sounds and rhythms." He highlighted its unpredictable structure, noting that the album is "at turns playful and gritty" and "swings from delicate, childlike wonder to deep global grooves." He also described it as "one of the year's most arresting listens," citing the "Kafkaesque undercurrent" of its fictional dream-research concept.
Beyond NPR, the album has also received strong reviews from international media outlets. The New York Times described it as "no argument here" music, while music publication Clash Magazine gave it a score of 9 out of 10.
British culture outlet The Upcoming awarded the album a perfect score of 5 out of 5, and other publications including Alternative Press, Wonderland, The Greatest, and Huck have also highlighted 'Gongbu' in their coverage.
With increasing global recognition for its distinctive musical identity, Balming Tiger is expected to continue activities both in Korea and abroad.
