MC Mong sparks backlash after bringing IU into latest livestream controversy
by Minsoo-Kim · allkpopMC Mong has once again sparked controversy after launching a third livestream broadcast less than a day after declaring there would be “no more exposés.” This time, however, criticism intensified as he unexpectedly mentioned IU, who has no direct connection to the ongoing dispute.
During the livestream on May 20 KST, MC Mong denied allegations surrounding illegal gambling, rumored affairs involving Cha Ga Won, and prostitution-related suspicions. He also claimed that MBC’s ‘PD Notebook’ and other parties were collaborating in what he described as an effort to “take MC Mong down.”
In the middle of the broadcast, MC Mong referenced IU’s recent controversy surrounding the drama ‘Perfect Crown’, saying, “A while ago, an MBC drama was criticized for historical distortion and IU bowed her head in apology. Why is IU apologizing instead of the staff who created the historical distortion? Celebrities are the weak ones because they are publicly exposed figures.”
IU starred in ‘Perfect Crown,’ which concluded on May 16 but faced backlash over several historically inaccurate settings. Criticism intensified following a coronation scene in the finale where a prince wore an allegedly inappropriate ceremonial crown while subjects shouted “Cheonse” instead of “Manse,” leading to accusations of historical distortion.
As the controversy grew, IU, Byeon Woo Seok, director Park Joon Hwa, and the writer all issued public apologies.
However, many pointed out that the issue had no connection to MC Mong’s ongoing dispute. Critics argued that by invoking IU’s name and framing celebrities as “weak,” MC Mong unintentionally undermined IU’s efforts to responsibly address the controversy as the drama’s lead actress.
This is not the first time MC Mong’s public remarks have drawn unrelated celebrities into controversy. During his first livestream on May 18, he alleged that a relative of One Hundred chairman Cha Ga Won encouraged Baekhyun to gamble and claimed the existence of an illegal gambling group involving several entertainment industry figures, including Kim Min Jong.
He also revealed alleged production costs for Baekhyun’s albums and contract figures involving THE BOYZ, comments that many criticized as reckless and invasive.
Although MC Mong later apologized to Baekhyun during a second livestream, saying, “I’m sorry. I love him. There’s no one kinder than him,” criticism continued as the information had already spread publicly.
Meanwhile, several individuals mentioned by name during MC Mong’s broadcasts, including Kim Min Jong and YouTuber Karacula, have announced legal action or filed complaints in response to the allegations.
